  • The role of the school board is to ensure that school districts are responsive to the values, beliefs and priorities of their communities. Boards fulfill this role by performing five major responsibilities:

    • Setting direction
    • Establishing an effective and efficient structure
    • Providing support
    • Ensuring accountability
    • Providing community leadership as advocates for children, the school district and public schools

  • The school board represents the community; therefore it needs to respect input from the community. The school board wants to be in touch with the community and know what is important to its members. Community members need to feel they are being listened to and heard. The school board wants to be consistent in the way it responds to community concerns. For more information about school board protocol guidelines, please refer to Responding to Community/Staff Concerns or Complaints from the SHUSD Governance Handbook.

SHUSD protocol states that the Board president responds to correspondence on behalf of the board. It is important for community members to know that no one board member holds any individual authority to act or speak for the entire board. Click here to visit the webpage to read more.
