A Message from Our Superintendent
|
|
|
|
It has been a busy start to 2025 in St. Helena Unified! Campuses are bustling with activity as staff ensure they have exposed students to all of the essential learnings by June; high school seniors are anxiously opening and waiting for college and post-college acceptance letters; athletes are busy with practices and competitions; visual and performing arts programs are preparing for Spring concerts and performances; and much, much more.
I have had the honor of observing in classrooms on each campus again these past two weeks, and I remain incredibly proud of the teaching and learning that occurs each day in our schools. There is immense evidence of research-based teaching strategies and a highly collaborative environment for staff to ensure every student is progressing. Most importantly, the feeling tone throughout each school is palpable – students are happy and having fun while learning! They welcome us into their rooms and love sharing what they are doing. From our littlest learners in kindergarten to our ‘near adults’ in high school, there is a pride in St. Helena that resonates on every site.
I am also thrilled to see so much parent engagement throughout our District. From volunteers giving their time and talents in our classrooms and Parent Groups who work so hard to support our programs, to attendance at ELAC, DELAC, and information nights, it is clear that we have high levels of engagement and that our students and staff benefit from so much support and partnership. As I see you throughout the District, please do not hesitate to introduce yourself. I am enjoying meeting everyone and believe that the more we work collaboratively, the better our schools are for our children. Along those lines, my door is always open and you are also welcome to call or email.
Warmly,
Jodi McClay, Ed.D.
Superintendent

Elementary Music Program Shines at Statewide Conference
|
Earlier this year, Mr. Binder applied for our elementary music program to perform at the California All State Music Education Conference. Out of schools statewide, we were one of six selected—a tremendous honor for our program, district, and community. On January 16th, 5th-grade students performed brilliantly at the Elementary School Showcase in Sacramento, proudly representing our community.

Fourth-grade students explore California’s history and government!

Fourth graders from SHES visited the California Railroad Museum to learn about Chinese immigrants’ role in building the Central Pacific Railroad. The trip included time at the State Capitol, where they watched the Senate approve new laws and toured its historic halls, deepening their understanding of California’s heritage and governance.

Helping Your Children at Home
|
Here are some simple tips to help you and your family.
1. Academic Support
-
Create a Homework Routine: Set a specific time and quiet space for homework every day. Consistency is key!
-
Daily Reading: Encourage your child to read for 20 minutes each day. You can make it a family activity by reading together and discussing books.
2. Encourage Healthy Habits
-
Balance Screen Time: Use timers to limit screen time and encourage outdoor play or creative activities instead.
-
Healthy Sleep Routines: Kids thrive with 8–10 hours of sleep. Help them wind down with a bedtime story or relaxing music to support achieving 8-10 hours each night.
3. Support Emotional Wellness
-
Open Communication: Encourage children to share their feelings each day. Ask questions like; "What was the best part of your day?" "What did you wish you had more time for today?" "What was one act of kindness you did today?"
4. Seek Support If Needed 🌟
- Remember, it’s okay to ask for help. If you or your family are feeling overwhelmed, reach out.
5. Immigration Questions
- Please visit the District website for questions or concerns regarding immigration policies. Valuable and current information is located under the "Parent" tab on the homepage and is updated daily as information comes in or changes.
